After looking at YouTube’s Ad Blitz page earlier today, we were able to see 72 separate Super Bowl ads. The Focus on the Family ad featuring Tim Tebow was not one of them. We aren’t sure whether the Tebow ad was ever included in the Ad Blitz site along with all the other Super Bowl ads, but it sure doesn’t appear to be there now. We repeatedly tried multiple methods of viewing or scrolling through the ads on that site. We also did a Google Search looking for any other coverage of this situation and found none.
Earlier this week via Twitter, we encouraged people to vote for the Tebow ad on Hulu and we also saw it on USA Today’s ad voting and rankings page. So, both Hulu and USA Today deemed the Tebow ad a legitimate ad for voting purposes. Apparently, YouTube found some reason to not include it on their Ad Blitz site.
YouTube, which is owned by Google, has been caught up in allegations of censorship in the past. Google’s censorship has been so widespread that there is a Wikipedia entry called Censorship by Google. In 2008, Google refused to accept advertising from a British pro-life group. Google’s rejection of the ads was on the grounds that, “[a]t this time, Google policy does not permit the advertisement of websites that contain ‘abortion and religion-related content’.”
