The Obama Administration recently published the rule it announced last summer, compelling Americans to choose a plan that covers all Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved “contraception”—which includes life-ending drugs and devices such as the abortion-inducing drug ella. This is an unprecedented attack on the freedom of conscience. The HHS Mandate also forces healthcare insurance providers to offer plans that cover these life-ending drugs and devices, as well as services, regardless of the providers’ religious beliefs or moral convictions. While many assume that President Obama issued a “compromise” on February 10, 2012, no change in policy took place.

This attack on Americans’ freedom of conscience is unprecedented and calls for immediate action.  As Speaker Boehner recently stated, “If the President does not reverse the Department’s attack on religious freedom, then the Congress, acting on behalf of the American people and the Constitution we are sworn to uphold and defend, must.”

Congress has introduced the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, which would ensure Americans are not coerced to violate their religious beliefs or moral convictions.
