The 2012 Republican Platform marked a significant pro-life, pro-woman victory, largely thanks to AUL Action’s resolve to ensure the platform prioritized women’s health. Late Tuesday afternoon, an amendment was unanimously approved by the Republican Platform Committee, evidencing the Republican Party’s commitment to championing the dignity of women and exposing the truth that abortion endangers women’s mental and physical health.
The historic, woman-centered language in the GOP Platform states:
Through Obamacare, the Obama Administration has promoted the notion that abortion is healthcare. We, however, affirm the dignity of women by protecting the sanctity of human life. Numerous studies have shown that abortion endangers the health and well-being of women and we stand firmly against it.
AUL Action worked closely with delegates to ensure that the Republican Platform affirmatively acknowledged the dignity of women and highlighted the risks abortion poses to women’s health. This and other pro-life, pro-woman provisions of the Republican Platform demonstrate that the Republican Party is the party that respects and champions women and affirmatively refutes malicious and politically motivated allegations that the Party is engaged in a “war on women.”
In underscoring that to be pro-life is to be pro-woman, the Republican Platform affirmed the truth that women do not need to pit their interests against those of their children in order to achieve equality or success. Notably, the GOP Platform’s recognition of motherhood and pregnancy as a part of a woman’s unique abilities extols and empowers women, rather than subjecting women to the limiting and confining vision abortion rights activists have sought to impose on them.
Furthermore, the Platform’s recognition that abortion is not healthcare, but in fact a procedure that endangers women’s health, directly confronts the reality we face in America today: inherently unsafe abortion-on-demand for any reason, at any time throughout all nine months of pregnancy. Key to ending abortion in America is exposing the falsity that abortion is safer than childbirth and that abortion is a low-risk medical procedure.
The 2012 Republican Platform affirms that women do not need abortion nor do they need to put their lives and health at risk to realize their goals and dreams. Furthermore, this significant addition to the Republican Platform also reflects a growing conviction that, in addition to placing a woman’s life at risk, abortion irreversibly damages the relationship between a mother and her child.
AUL Action was honored to have contributed to the 2012 Republican Platform, ensuring that it affirms the dignity of women and confirms that abortion endangers the health and well-being of women.
