WASHINGTON, D.C. (5/30/2012) – In advance of a vote today, Americans United for Life Action President and CEO Dr. Charmaine Yoest called on members of the U.S. House to support H.R. 3541, the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act of 2012, which would prevent killing an unborn child based on his or her sex. While the abortion lobby has denied that sex selection abortion is an issue, a new video released this week from Live Action shows that, even on an issue as extreme as killing a child for being a certain sex, the abortion lobby is glad to oblige.
“This is a real war on women,” said Dr. Yoest. “And it is wrong when we turn a blind eye to women being eliminated in the womb simply for being a member of the female sex.”
Federal and state laws prohibit the dissimilar treatment of males and females as well as other forms of sex discrimination in various contexts, including the provision of employment, education, housing, health insurance coverage, and even athletics. Yet, federal law currently lacks similar protection for unborn female children.
“There is nothing pro-woman about killing a baby girl because she is female, and putting her mother’s health and safety at risk in the process,” said Dr. Yoest.
“Americans—whether pro-life or pro-abortion—overwhelmingly oppose this barbaric practice that undermines the dignity of the human person and agree that sex-selection abortion should be illegal. AULA calls on all Members of the House to vote for PRENDA to stop the war on women yet to be born.”
Recently Dr. Yoest testified in Missouri on behalf of a bill to protect unborn children from discrimination through sex selection abortion. To read AUL’s model legislation or to learn more on the Missouri bill, click here.
Currently, four states—Arizona, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania—maintain prohibitions on sex-selection abortion. Notably, none of these prohibitions has ever been challenged in court as unconstitutional. To read AUL’s analysis of the current Live Action undercover videos that show a Planned Parenthood employee discussing a sex selection abortion, click here.
